Comporta Area

Comporta is hard to describe because it doesn’t actually compare with anywhere you may have visited before. This enchanting seaside village on the Troia peninsula has its own pace and unique charm which we all fell for immediately.

Days here are unhurried. It’s an easy, breezy, barefoot and blustery existence. The focus is the beach. And what a beach! Twelve km of uninterrupted mellow yellow, fine and powdery sand.

This is rice-paddy land – great fields of rice stretch all the way to the coast, sheltered from the stiff Atlantic breezes by sand dunes.

Homes are totally unique to this area of the world – your usual concept of a home does not apply here. Homes in Comporta are clusters of small, low-built, thatched cabanas with cobalt Comporta blue shutters, doors and window frames. These quaint cabanas make use of beams of wood from nearby pine forests and are lined with tightly-packed grasses from the riverbanks. You will not find any gates, tarmac, nor high walls. You will find, instead, sandy tracks leading from one cottage enclave to the next.

In the local beach bars and restaurants, you’ll rub shoulders with A-listers from the international worlds of art, fashion and European commerce. Comporta has been found only by a knowing few, but it is about to become less of a secret.
