Festival Sayulita 2017

Festival Sayulita, now in its fourth year, will take place February 1-5 in Sayulita, Mexico. It’s not just a film festival, though – it’s a celebration of food, drinks, music, yoga, surfing, and much more. There will be lots of free activities, but also some high-end VIP experiences too.

“Every year, the Festival has a theme”, commented Lina Weissman, one of the original founders. “This year, the theme is ‘Beyond’. Expect to be brought beyond your expectations, beyond your experiences and beyond your limits.”

Risa Mara Machuca, the festival’s film curator – whose own projects have screened at over 150 film festivals – noted, “We seek films from all over the world, and highly encourage Spanish subtitles. Festival Sayulita is about celebrating great work whether it be a short, documentary, feature, or animation.”

Here are 5 reasons why a stop at Festival Sayulita should be on your vacation itinerary:

1. Non-profit event
Festival Sayulita operates as a non-profit organization – with over 100 volunteers every year. The festival’s goal is to raise funds to open El Centro – a sustainable, arts-based community center that will support local, creative talent.

2. Film
This year’s line-up includes 54 films – 24 are Mexican and 10 are about surfing. All movie venues are free, but ticket holders will have access to seats first. (Feel free to bring a blanket and enjoy.)

3. Music
Check out the free live music every day in the plaza, including mariachis. On Saturday night, February 4th, the Jungle Live concert will feature headliners Café Tacvba. Other bands include – Nortec Collective: Bostich + Fussible, Troker, Sotomayor, Burton and Los Gatos Negros de Sayulita.

4. Drinks
Festival Sayulita is partnering with some of the finest distillers and brewers in Mexico. Try some Mexican wine, craft beer, or Mezcal. Pairing dinners at local restaurants will take place on the evening of Thursday, February 2nd.

5. Workshops
There are 9 workshops this year. Vida workshops include beach workouts, yoga, SUP, Fun Run and a mountain bike race. Other workshops focus on film, food and spirits. Workshops are included in Lujo and VIP tickets, and can be purchased a la carte the week prior to the Festival.
