Believe it or not, Mexico‘s Pacific Coast is a leading destination for polo, attracting teams and spectators from all over the world. In Mexico, November marks the start of the much awaited polo season, with destinations such as Riviera Nayarit and Costa Careyes taking the lead.
Elegant by Design
Polo has long been considered a sophisticated sport, frequently viewed as the pastime of choice for the elite. Part of its charm lies in the graceful nature of the sport itself, but equally attractive are all the fine parties and champagne-filled social events associated with the equestrian game.
From November through April, visitors to Mexico’s Riviera Nayarit and Costa Careyes can enjoy numerous matches and events at local polo clubs whether as spectators or participants.
Polo on the Pacific Coast
Two world-class polo clubs dominate the polo scene on Mexico’s Pacific Coast: Costa Careyes Polo Club and La Patrona Polo and Equestrian Club (San Pancho, Riviera Nayarit).
Costa Careyes Polo Club
In operation since 1990, the Costa Careyes Polo Club is located three miles south of Costa Careyes’ central cultural area, about 1.5 hours from Manzanillo airport and just under 3 hours from Puerto Vallarta. The polo club features two regulation Bermuda grass fields as well as stables for up to 150 horses. Throughout the season, 60 playing ponies are available for all levels of play, complete with grooms and full tack.
Matches usually take place four times a week during the season: Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

La Patrona Polo and Equestrian Club
This club is located amidst the palm groves and virgin jungle of San Francisco (San Pancho) a beach town on the Riviera Nayarit. It is about 10 minutes by car from Sayulita, 20 minutes from Punta de Mita and just over an hour from Puerto Vallarta.
The club’s architecture and design places a strong emphasis on sustainability and respect for the environment. It is home to two professional polo fields (ideal for polo opens), one indoor polo arena and a junior practice field. The club also features stables with boxes, saddlery and changing rooms.
Besides polo, the club offers other equestrian activities and classes, which take place in three additional meadows. You will find riding, classical dressage, jumping, vaulting, combined driving and even equino-therapy here.
