However, there is more to Portugal’s beaches than the prize-winning Algarve. Why not visit Comporta to lounge among the sand dunes? The Algarve
Famed for its mild climate, beautiful beaches, tiny coves, crystalline waters and world-famous golf, there’s no denying the Algarve has become a very popular choice. However, despite being in high demand, you can still find authentic Portugal among the region’s soaring cliffs, white-washed villages, rare rock formations, natural wetlands, rocky bays and golden sand beaches.
Comporta
Less well-know but equally fabulous, Comporta is unrivaled for its enchanting barefoot ambience and beach cabanas on the Troia peninsula. Just under an hour and a half drive south of Lisbon, you can expect 12 km (7.5 miles) of uninterrupted mellow yellow, powdery sand beaches. Moreover, great swathes of rice paddies stretch all the way to the coast, sheltered from the cool Atlantic breezes by sand dunes.
Peniche to Nazaré Coast
A stunning paradise for surfers and pretty much anyone who loves the beach. As fresh winds blow in and the swells rise, the ocean rolls forth to form froth-topped waves and super cylindrical curls. It’s no wonder the beach at Nazaré features annually in the World Surf League’s Big Wave Tour (Oct/Nov). All while spectacular cliffs soar above and the white sand beaches and coves seem to stretch endlessly. Don’t forget to look out for the intricate hand-made lace here.
